Police have arrested two persons on charges of secretly recording video and creating a commotion with officials at the Patuakhali Deputy Commissioner’s office. They were arrested from in front of the deputy commissioner’s room around 12pm on Thursday (September 17).

The two arrested are Md. Riaz Uddin and Md. Shahid Badsha Sabuj. Riaz identified himself as a representative of a newspaper named ‘Crime Patrol’ and Shahid as a representative of the newspaper ‘Praner Bangladesh’.

Nezarat Deputy Collector (NDC) of the Deputy Commissioner’s office Md. Akib Raihan informed that while official work was going on in the deputy commissioner’s room, two persons were seen creating a commotion with administration staff outside the room on the CCTV camera. The matter came to notice as their behaviour and movements appeared suspicious.

Later when they were searched, a mobile phone was seized from the chest pocket of Riaz Uddin’s shirt. The NDC claimed that video recording was running through an app on that phone. He claimed that he was secretly recording the official activities of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

He further informed that at one stage of questioning the two identified themselves as journalists. When suspicion was also created about their identity, they were later handed over to the police.

However, the arrested Riaz Uddin and Shahid Badsha Sabuj claimed that they had gone to the Deputy Commissioner’s office with a complaint. They claimed that they were harassed as the complaint was sent to the tables of multiple officials. Later when they went in front of the deputy commissioner’s room to inform him of the matter, the office staff prevented them from entering inside.

When asked about the secret video recording, they admitted that a mistake had been made.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patuakhali Sadar Thana Moniruzzaman said the two arrested have been taken to the thana. They will be questioned. After the questioning, further action will be taken in accordance with the law.
