Two Rohingya children drown while bathing in pond

Two Rohingya children have drowned while bathing in a pond adjacent to the Nayapara Rohingya camp in Hnila union of Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar.

The deceased are Md. Ershad, 12, son of Zahid Hasan, a resident of Rohingya camp number 26, and Khalilur Rahman, 11, son of Mohammad Alam, of the same camp.

According to local sources, on Thursday (April 9) afternoon, some children went to bathe in a pond at a brick kiln adjacent to the Nayapara camp. Ershad and Khalilur Rahman drowned while swimming. When the other children screamed, locals quickly reached the spot and rescued them.

The two children were taken to the Mouchani camp hospital, where the doctor on duty declared them dead.

Camp boatman Badrul Islam said that the accident was completely unexpected and happened suddenly.

Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam said, "Police were sent to the scene after receiving the information. The bodies have been handed over to the relatives as there is no complaint from the families of the deceased."
