Two schoolgirls drown while swimming in Shitalakshya river in Gazipur

Two schoolgirls have died after drowning while bathing in the Shitalakshya River in Shreepur upazila of Gazipur.

The victims, identified as Suborna Akter, was the daughter of Shyamal Mro and Marzia Akter Mim, was the daughter of Milon Mia. Both were tenth-grade students of Gosinga Girls’ High School and residents of Khojekhni village.

The incident took place near the Marina Residential Project area in Gosinga Union on Friday afternoon (April 17), officials said.

According to locals, amid the intense heat, the two girls entered the river with several friends for a swim. At one point, they went underwater and did not resurface.

After being informed by classmates, family members and locals began searching the river. Suborna’s body was recovered first. Later in the evening, a diving team from the fire service recovered Mim’s body around 7:00pm.

Suborna’s uncle Akram Hossain said neither of the girls knew how to swim. Suborna was later buried following funeral prayers after Isha.

Fire Service officials said locals initially recovered one body before divers retrieved the second during an extended search operation.

Police confirmed that the bodies were handed over to the families without autopsy following their request.
