Two siblings died while undergoing treatment at separate hospitals in Dhaka’s Moghbazar, with police initially suspecting food poisoning as the cause.

The deceased are Afrida Chowdhury, 10, a class three student at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College on Bailey Road, and her one-year-old brother Ilham Chowdhury.

Both the parents also fell ill after eating the same food but later recovered after receiving treatment.

The family, originally from Cumilla Kotwali, currently lives in a rented house in Moghbazar. They fell ill after eating breakfast on Saturday morning.

Sub-Inspector Md Suman Mia of Hatirjheel Police Station, said, "Elham died at 1:30pm, while Afrida passed away earlier at 6:50am."

According to Hatirjheel police, one child was taken to Moghbazar Community Hospital and the other to Rashmono Specialized Hospital, but both could not be saved. Their bodies have been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death.

"Legal procedures into this matter are underway, while investigations continue to determine the exact cause behind the tragedy," police said.
