Two siblings drown in Kishoreganj pond; brother dies saving sister

A four-year-old child has lost his life after drowning in a pond in Mithamain upazila of Kishoreganj while trying to save his younger sister. Both siblings – the two-year-old sister and her brother – have died in the incident.

The accident occurred around 10am on Wednesday (July 29) in Khalapara village under Ghagra Union of the upazila.

The deceased have been identified as Refat Mia (4) and his sister Safa Akhter (2), children of Rubel Mia of Khalapara village.

According to local sources, Refat and Safa were playing with other children on the bank of a pond beside their house in the morning. At one point, Safa accidentally fell into the pond, and Refat went into the water to rescue her. He also drowned.

Later, locals rescued the two children and took them to Mithamain Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

Mithamain Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Abdullah-Al-Shafi said the two children had died before being brought to the hospital.

Mithamain Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monwar Hossain said police have visited the scene after receiving the news. Necessary legal action is being taken in this regard.
