Two siblings killed landslide in Cox's Bazar
Two children, who were cousins, met a tragic end after being buried under a landslide in Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar.
The incident took place in the hilly village of Mohseniakata under Ward No. 7 of Boroitoli Union in the early hours of Thursday (July 9).
The deceased were identified as Rumi Akter, 15, daughter of Mohammad Kajal and a 10th-grade student at Boroitoli Dakhil Madrasa, and Mohammad Tausif, 10, son of Abdul Majid and a 4th-grade student at a local government primary school. Both were residents of Mohseniakata village.
According to local sources, following several days of continuous heavy rainfall, a massive chunk of a hill collapsed onto a house below during the early hours of the morning. Rumi and Tausif, who were asleep at the time, were buried under the mud. Family members, with the help of locals, later removed the soil and recovered their bodies.
Boroitoli Union Parishad Chairman Mohammad Salekuzzaman confirmed the deaths of the two children.
"With a severe flood on one hand and landslides on the other, intense panic has gripped the local residents. For the last two days, village after village has been submerged by hill tracks and floodwaters. Amid this extreme disaster, the untimely and tragic death of these two children due to a landslide is deeply painful," the UP Chairman said.
