Two men arrested over the killing of four members of a family in Rangpur have given confessional statements before a court, police said.

The accused, Mugdha Das and his maternal cousin Siddhartha, appeared before Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Rafiqul Islam on Sunday night (August 23) and gave statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Following the statements, the court ordered that they be sent to Rangpur Central Jail.

The two were brought to court under tight security at around 8pm.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Inspector (Investigation) Nirmal Chandra, who is investigating the case, confirmed the development.

He said both suspects admitted their involvement in the killings during their statements. However, he declined to disclose details of what they told the court, citing the ongoing investigation.

Asked why and how the four members of the same family were killed, the investigation officer said the matter was still under investigation.

Police recovered the bodies of former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, their daughter Agami and son Ayush from a locked house in the city’s Machuapara area on Saturday night.

The bodies were later sent for autopsy, while police arrested Mugdha and Siddhartha in connection with the killings.
