Two SUST students expelled over rape of classmate
The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has expelled two students for life after an investigation confirmed their involvement in the rape of a female classmate.
The expelled students, Shanta Adnan and Swagata Das Partha, were both third-year students in the Department of Social Sciences. The decision was made during an emergency meeting of the university syndicate on Tuesday, following a report submitted by a probe committee. The disciplinary committee recommended permanent expulsion after reviewing the findings.
According to university sources, the incident took place on May 2 when the two accused allegedly lured the victim to a student residence in the Surma Residential Area near the SUST campus in Sylhet. The victim reported that she was rendered unconscious and subsequently raped, with the act recorded on a mobile phone.
Following a case filed by the victim, Sylhet Kotwali police arrested the two suspects on Thursday night. They were later placed on a four-day remand on Monday, as approved by a local court, to facilitate further investigation.
