Two tourists found dead in Bandarban

The bodies of two tourists were recovered from a deep ravine near the Boga Lake View Point along the Keokradong road in Ruma upazila of Bandarban following a joint overnight search operation by the army, police and local residents.

The deceased were identified as Jamir Uddin, 32, of Borhanuddin upazila in Bhola district, and Rokaiya Akter, 30, of Lalbagh in Dhaka.

According to police and local sources, a group of 10 tourists travelled from Dhaka to Bandarban on six motorcycles on Wednesday night. They reached Boga Lake on Thursday afternoon (July 30) and checked into a local cottage before visiting the nearby viewpoint around 5:30pm.

After taking photographs at the scenic spot, eight members of the group returned. However, Jamir Uddin and Rokaiya Akter reportedly ignored their guide's instructions and rode a motorcycle further toward the restricted section near the viewpoint.

When the pair failed to return by evening, the guide informed the Boga Lake Army Camp, prompting a coordinated search operation involving the army, police and local volunteers.

After nearly five hours of searching, rescuers recovered the two bodies from a steep ravine adjacent to the viewpoint at around 11:00 pm.

Manas Barua, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ruma Police Station, said, "The bodies had been recovered and legal procedures were underway. Investigators were working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident."
