Two women arrested at Dhanmondi 32 sent to jail

A court has sent two women, arrested from Dhanmondi 32 while trying to pay tribute to Bangabandhu's portrait, to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act six months ago.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain rejected their bail petitions and ordered them sent to jail on Sunday, August 16. Prosecution SI Abul Bashar confirmed the matter.

The two women are Suma Baral alias Dolly and Jannatul Ferdous alias Jannat.

Police arrested them from Dhanmondi 32 on Saturday night when they went to pay tribute to Bangabandhu's portrait.

On Sunday, investigation officer Abu Suleman Sumon produced the two accused before the court and sought to keep them in jail custody in the Anti-Terrorism Act case. Lawyers Litum Mia and Advocate Gazi Faisal Islam filed bail petitions on behalf of the two accused, which were rejected.

According to the case statement, police received intelligence that 20 to 25 members of the banned Mohila Awami League were gathering on Road No 3 in Dhanmondi on February 27 at around 6am to hold an anti-government rally with placards. Police arrested several individuals at the scene, while others fled.

The arrestees allegedly confessed to police that they had gathered to carry out anti-state conspiracies and propaganda to overthrow the government. A case was later filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The two women have now been shown arrested in that case.
