Two women arrested with ammunition, 5kg cannabis at Kutupalong camp

Two women have been arrested with eight rounds of ammunition and five kilograms of cannabis during a security raid at the Kutupalong Registered Rohingya Camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said.

The raid was conducted around 2:00pm on Friday in Block B of the camp following intelligence information, RAB-15 said in a press release issued on Saturday morning (August 8).

The detainees were identified as Somsida, 17, and Laila Khatun, 47, both residents of Block B of the registered camp.

According to RAB, its members stopped the two women in front of a residential house and conducted a search with assistance from female RAB personnel.

Eight rounds of ammunition were allegedly recovered from a small white container tucked into Somsida’s waistband. The ammunition was found during a search of her clothing, RAB said.

Five kilograms of cannabis were also recovered from the room in front of Layla Khatun’s residence. The drugs were allegedly found inside a white plastic sack containing five blue polythene packets after she pointed out the location to the RAB team. A mobile phone was also seized during the operation.

RAB alleged that the two women were directly involved in drug trafficking, although their statements could not be independently verified.

The detainees, along with the seized ammunition, cannabis and other evidence, were handed over to Ukhiya police for further legal action, RAB said.
