Two women die by drowning in pond at JnU second campus

Rabeya, 14, and Julia, 20, have died after drowning in a pond while bathing at the second campus of Jagannath University (JnU). The accident took place at the under-construction campus of JnU in the Tegharia area of Keraniganj in the afternoon on Monday.

The deceased are Rabeya, daughter of Atikur Rahman, a local resident of Tegharia, and Julia, wife of Shafiqul Islam.

Police and locals said four women went down into the pond together to bathe around 3pm. Two of them managed to swim to the bank but Rabeya and Julia sank in the water. Later local residents recovered their bodies.

Abul Kalam Azad, inspector (investigation) of South Keraniganj police station, said the bodies have been recovered for autopsy and legal process. He said the matter is being examined.

Meanwhile, a representative team of the university administration inspected the spot after getting the news of the incident.

Professor Dr Rais Uddin, vice-chancellor of Jagannath University, said after this incident an emergency notice has been issued from the university side banning public entry and use of the pond.
