Two women held over theft attempt at Manikganj temple

Two women have been detained in Manikganj after allegedly entering a temple disguised as Hindu devotees and attempting to steal a gold chain from a worshipper.

The incident took place on Wednesday (July 22) at the Sri Sri Anandamoyee Kalibari Temple in Manikganj municipality.

The detainees were identified as Bilkis Akter, 20, of Haluapara in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj and Mina Akter, 19, of Moushadia in Lakhai upazila.

According to allegations, the two women entered the temple wearing traditional Hindu symbols, including conch bangles and vermilion, to pose as Hindu worshippers. During the distribution of prasad, they allegedly attempted to snatch a gold chain from a female devotee. Alert worshippers caught them on the spot before handing them over to police.

Gouranga Chandra Sarkar, general secretary of the temple management committee, said the alleged theft attempt occurred while a Mahanam Yajna was underway with hundreds of devotees present.

He said the two women were detained by worshippers and later turned over to police.

Md. Monir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Manikganj Sadar Police Station, confirmed that the women had been detained over allegations of theft.

"No formal written complaint had been filed as of Thursday. Legal action will be taken following an investigation if a complaint is lodged," he said.
