Two construction workers were killed and another injured after a mound of earth collapsed onto an under-construction culvert in Cox’s Bazar.

The accident took place around 11:30am on Wednesday (June 3) in the Darianagar area along the road connecting Darianagar to the Veterinary University, where construction work on the culvert was underway.

The deceased were identified as Md. Ilias and Rakib. The identity of the injured worker could not be confirmed immediately.

According to project officials, the workers were engaged in construction activities inside the culvert when a large section of adjacent soil suddenly gave way, burying three workers under the debris.

Abdur Rahman Majumdar, manager of Lucky Enterprise, the contractor overseeing the project, said local residents and fellow workers launched an immediate rescue effort and rushed the victims to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

Dr. Subakatagin Mohammad Sohel, residential medical officer (RMO) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, said three workers were brought to the hospital in critical condition. Doctors declared two of them dead on arrival, while the injured worker remains under treatment.

Hospital authorities said the bodies of the deceased have been kept at the morgue and will undergo autopsy if required.

Authorities have begun looking into the circumstances surrounding the collapse and are expected to take necessary legal and administrative measures.
