Two-month-old baby dies after assault by father in Darus Salam

A two-month-old baby died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after allegedly being strangled and beaten by her father during a family dispute in the capital’s Darus Salam area.

The baby, identified as Sabiha, died while undergoing treatment at the hospital on Sunday noon (September 6), according to police.

Inspector Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, said the child’s body had been kept at the hospital morgue.

According to the child’s mother, Laboni Akter Jannati, Sabiha was seriously injured after her father, Hridoy Khan, allegedly assaulted and strangled her before fleeing with Tk 500 from their rented home in Gaidartek.

The baby was rescued in critical condition and taken to DMCH for treatment. She had severe injury marks on her neck and cheeks, her mother said.

Laboni said she married Hridoy, an employee at a biryani shop, about a year and a half ago after a relationship. Hridoy had previously been married and divorced.

She alleged that Hridoy frequently threatened to kill Sabiha and sometimes behaved abnormally, raising concerns about his mental health.

Describing the incident, Laboni said the family had been sleeping together in the morning when Hridoy suddenly attacked the baby before fleeing with the money.

Hridoy, a native of Baheratala village in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur, had been living with his family in a rented house in Darus Salam.

He has remained absconding since the incident.
