UGC forms committee to investigate roof collapse at Nazrul University

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday has announced the formation of a four-member committee to investigate the recent roof collapse at Kabi Nazrul Islam University’s under-construction building in Trishal, Mymensingh.

The committee, headed by Mohammad Maksudur Rahman Bhuiyan, Director of UGC’s Planning and Development Division, is tasked with inspecting the site and submitting a detailed report promptly. The inspection is scheduled for August 3.

The incident occurred at the extension building (parking area) connected to the second floor of a 10-story dormitory adjacent to the university’s Bidrohi Hall. The roof of the building gave way during construction, injuring at least 11 workers. Eight of the injured received treatment at Trishal Upazila Hospital, while three, in serious condition, were transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Professor Dr. Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, member of the UGC Planning and Development Division, expressed deep regret over the incident and emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation.

The committee’s findings will play a crucial role in ensuring safety measures in ongoing and future infrastructure projects at the university.
