UIU students block road in capital demanding withdrawal of expulsions
Students of United International University (UIU) blocked the Kuril Bishwaroad-Badda road near Natun Bazar in Dhaka on Saturday morning, demanding the reversal of expulsion orders against 40 students.
The road blockade began around 8:30 am, bringing traffic to a complete halt.
The protest centers on two main demands: the unconditional withdrawal of the expulsion orders against students involved in the movement calling for the resignation of the university’s vice-chancellor, and the prompt resumption of normal academic activities by addressing the ongoing administrative crisis.
According to UIU officials and students, the university’s vice-chancellor and 11 administrative staff resigned on April 26 and 27 following student protests.
Subsequently, on April 28, the university suspended all academic activities indefinitely.
While online classes resumed on May 20, some students rejected this mode of learning, continuing to demand on-campus classes and greater administrative transparency.
Students also claim that the administration has ignored their 13-point list of reasonable demands and that on June 2, 41 students were expelled as part of disciplinary actions.
