Ruhin Hossain Prince, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), has claimed that ‘ultra-reactionary’ communal groups are on the rise in the country. He made the remark on Friday (September 19) afternoon during the inaugural session of the party’s 13th National Conference in Dhaka.

He said, “At this time we are witnessing the rise of right-wing ultra-reactionary communal forces in the country. Dominant and imperialist states are taking aggressive roles to establish their hegemony over our country.”

Noting that a free and acceptable election is essential for moving forward on the path of democracy, he said, “Certain quarters are trying to obstruct this election. The roles of government advisers and allied parties are also raising questions about the timely arrangement of elections.”

Prince added that this people’s uprising has once again brought forth the aspiration for democracy and a society free from inequality. “The struggle of the communists continues, fuelled by the sacrifices of hundreds of martyrs,” he said.

He further stated, “To build a democratic and egalitarian society, it is now an urgent duty to put an end to criminalised economics and politics, to build an alternative alliance of principled left democratic politics, and to establish a left democratic progressive government.”

The national conference was inaugurated at the premises of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, with the national anthem, flag hoisting, and floral tributes at the martyrs’ memorial. The inaugural session was presided over by Abu Sayeed, Chairman of the Congress Preparation Committee.

The CPB announced that over 600 members, including 550 delegates and observers from across the country, are participating in this year’s conference. The council session will be held from September 20 to 22 at the BMA Auditorium on Topkhana Road.
