Umama Fatema, former spokesperson of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has announced her intention to contest the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election with an independent panel. She also invited students interested in working for the university’s welfare to join her initiative.

The announcement was made on Wednesday night through a post from her verified Facebook account.

In the post, Fatema introduced herself by name, department, session, and hall affiliation, and explained her motivation behind forming an independent panel. "Since my first year at the university, I have been involved with student political organizations, working both from within and outside them to serve student welfare," she wrote.

She highlighted her role in founding the platform "Legal Seat Is My Right" during her early university years to demand fair access to dormitory seats. Drawing from her experience, Fatema stated that Dhaka University's longstanding issues cannot be resolved without significant change—change that she believes only students can bring about.

"A united and legitimate student body—namely the student union—can reflect the true aspirations of the students," she emphasized.

Fatema also underscored the importance of independent leadership, stating, “Students want leaders who are not controlled by any political faction, who remain unwavering in defending student rights, and who are committed to turning the university into a hub of quality education and research—not just a breeding ground for political leadership.”

She further noted her plan to form a research-oriented, forward-thinking panel composed of students dedicated to positive transformation. "Our aim is to work for the overall welfare of the university through data-driven and visionary approaches," she said.

In a call to action, Fatema urged interested students to join her panel: "Those of you who want to restore the lost glory of Dhaka University, who are committed to fighting for legal seats, basic student rights, and a fair academic environment—we welcome you to be part of our panel."

In the first comment under her Facebook post, Fatema shared an online form for students interested in joining the panel.

The DUCSU election is expected to attract significant attention as students seek leadership that can address pressing campus issues and ensure accountability within the student body.
