The United Nations has congratulated the people of Bangladesh on the peaceful completion of the 13th National Parliamentary Election and referendum, pledging its full support and cooperation in building a peaceful and prosperous nation.

The remarks were made on Friday (February 13) during a regular press briefing at the United Nations Headquarters in New York by spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, on behalf of Secretary-General António Guterres.

Dujarric said the United Nations commends the people of Bangladesh for conducting the parliamentary election and referendum peacefully and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting the country’s efforts toward a peaceful and prosperous future.

Quoting the Secretary-General, he underscored the importance of strengthening democracy and the rule of law, fostering national unity among political parties, and ensuring the protection of human rights and minorities.

Guterres also called on political stakeholders to uphold democratic norms and work collectively to advance the rule of law, expressing hope for inclusive and sustainable reforms.

In a separate message marking the holy month of Ramadan, the Secretary-General noted that people in Palestine, Afghanistan, Yemen, Sudan and other regions continue to face conflict, hunger, displacement and inequality.

He urged global solidarity to uphold human dignity and rights, recalling the spirit of Ramadan amid growing divisions and crises worldwide.
