The United Nations will not be involved in organizing elections in Bangladesh, as the matter is strictly a political decision, said UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis.

Speaking at a "DCAB Talk" event hosted by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club on Wednesday, Lewis made it clear that the responsibility for deciding the timing and conduct of elections lies entirely with the people of Bangladesh and its political parties.

“The United Nations cannot play a role in conducting elections. That is a political decision. It is up to the people and political parties of Bangladesh to determine when elections will be held,” Lewis said.

She added that while the UN can offer technical assistance to the Election Commission if requested, it does not intervene in the political aspects of the electoral process.

DCAB President A.K.M. Moinuddin and General Secretary Md. Arifuzzaman Mamun also spoke at the event.
