The United Nations has assured full support for Bangladesh’s upcoming national elections, scheduled for February, emphasizing their importance for the country’s democratic development.

UN Resident Coordinator Gwynne Lewis made the remarks during a meeting with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Thursday (Seotember 4).

“The UN is committed to supporting efforts to ensure the elections are free, fair, and peaceful,” Lewis said.

She added that the UN would continue to assist in promoting transparency and credibility in the electoral process.

The meeting also discussed ongoing reform efforts, development priorities, and democratic transformation in Bangladesh.

Additionally, both sides reviewed preparations for the upcoming UN General Assembly session and the Rohingya Conference, expressing concern over the declining international funding for humanitarian assistance to Rohingya refugees.

Professor Yunus called for stronger international support, while the UN representative reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to Bangladesh’s reforms, democratic progress, and long-term development goals.
