UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' spokesman Stephen Dujarric has renewed call for free and fair elections in Bangladesh. He said: "We are calling for free and fair elections, where people can vote freely without any intimidation." He said this in response to a journalist's question at a briefing on Thursday (December 21). "Obviously after the election we may have something to say," he said. But our position remains unchanged. In response to a question about the burning of three compartments of the Dhaka-bound Mohanganj Express train on December 19, he said, "I offer my condolences to those who died in the terrible fire." I think it is the responsibility of the authorities of Bangladesh to fully investigate the source and bring those responsible to justice."

জাতিসংঘ মহাসচিব অ্যান্তোনিও গুতেরেসের মুখপাত্র স্টিফেন ডুজারিক বাংলাদেশে অবাধ ও সুষ্ঠু নির্বাচনের আহ্বান জানিয়েছেন। বৃহস্পতিবার (২১ ডিসেম্বর) এক ব্রিফিংয়ে সাংবাদিকের প্রশ্নের জবাবে তিনি এ কথা বলেন। তিনি বলেন, আমরা অবাধ ও সুষ্ঠু নির্বাচনের আহ্বান জানাচ্ছি, যেখানে মানুষ কোনো প্রকার ভয়ভীতি ছাড়াই স্বাধীনভাবে ভোট দিতে পারবেন। তিনি আরও বলেন, স্পষ্টতই নির্বাচনের পর আমাদের কিছু বলার থাকতে পারে। কিন্তু আমাদের অবস্থান অপরিবর্তিত রয়েছে। ১৯ ডিসেম্বর ঢাকাগামী মোহনগঞ্জ এক্সপ্রেস ট্রেনের তিনটি বগিতে অগ্নিসংযোগের বিষয়ে এক প্রশ্নের জবাবে তিনি বলেন, ভয়াবহ অগ্নিকাণ্ডে যারা মারা গেছেন তাদের প্রতি সমবেদনা জানাচ্ছি। আমি মনে করি, এর উৎস পুরোপুরি তদন্ত করে দায়ীদের বিচারের আওতায় আনা বাংলাদেশের কর্তৃপক্ষের দায়িত্ব।
