Unapproved branches, study centres of local and foreign universities ordered to close

The government and the University Grants Commission (UGC) have ordered the closure of branch campuses, study centres and tutorial centres of local and foreign universities operating without approval.

In a notification issued on Monday, March 30, the UGC said it has come to the attention of the Ministry of Education and the commission that several educational institutions are running branch campuses and study centres without authorisation.

The notification further stated that according to the Foreign University or Institution Branch Campus and Study Centre Operation Rules, 2014, there are specific regulations for operating such institutions.

All institutions operating without approval have been directed to submit applications to the UGC for authorisation in accordance with the rules by April 25. Meanwhile, all academic activities at these institutions will remain suspended until that time.

The UGC has warned that legal action will be taken against institutions that fail to apply within the stipulated time.
