Uncle dies while stopping father-son quarrel in Rajshahi

Md Idris Ali has been killed by a hasua blow while trying to stop a quarrel between his brother and nephew during field work in Paba upazila of Rajshahi on Thursday (August 27).

The incident took place around 7:30am at Dadpur Bagichapara village under Borgachi union of the upazila. Idris Ali, a resident of the same area and brother of Abu Bakar Siddique, died in the incident. Abu Bakar Siddique and his son Md Alfaj, 35, were also injured, according to local sources.

Local residents said Alfaj lit a biri in front of his father while they were cultivating paddy and cutting jute in the field. The father became angry and scolded him. This led to an initial verbal altercation that later turned into a physical fight between the father and son.

Eyewitnesses Aktar and Meraj of Dadpur Bagichapara, who were present at the spot, stopped their work and told them to go home. When the father-son fight resumed after some time, Idris Ali stepped forward to stop it. The hasua in Alfaj’s hand then left both his father and uncle seriously injured, the eyewitnesses said.

Eyewitness Aktar said he had asked them to stop the quarrel and return home. When the fight started again later, uncle Idris came forward to intervene and fell to the ground from the hasua blow.

Local people rescued the two injured and took them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. The duty doctor there declared Idris Ali dead around 8:30am.

Local sources said Alfaj returned home on bail last Sunday from jail in a women and children repression case. Locals have alleged that he is a drug addict, though police are investigating the matter.

Officer-in-charge of Paba police station Abdul Matin said the incident occurred due to a family dispute, according to preliminary information. Idris Ali died from a hasua blow and another person was injured. Necessary legal steps are being taken to bring the person involved under the law.
