Uncontrolled truck kills pedestrian, injures 4 in Sonargaon
A goods-laden truck lost control and crashed into an auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, killing a pedestrian and injuring four passengers on Tuesday (July 28) morning.
The accident occurred around 6:40am in the Sonakhali area on the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway. The deceased, Maya Alam (40), was a construction worker by profession. Though hailing from Bhola district, he lived with his family in a rented house in the Barakpur area of Sonakhali.
The injured have been identified as Alinur (25) and Suruj Mia (30) of Sonakhali, Shahid (28) of Baplupur, and Tika Khan (35) of Sonargaon. They were rescued by locals and admitted to Baraka Hospital.
Police and local sources said an auto-rickshaw was picking up passengers beside the highway when a speeding goods-laden truck heading towards Dhaka lost control and struck it with great force. The auto-rickshaw was mangled in the impact, and Maya Alam, who was standing on the roadside, died on the spot.
Kanchpur Highway Police Station personnel arrived at the scene and conducted a rescue operation, sending the injured to hospital.
Kanchpur Highway Police Station Sergeant Aowlad Hossain said both the truck and the auto-rickshaw involved in the accident have been seized. The body of the deceased is being sent to the morgue for autopsy.
Traffic movement on the highway remained normal after the accident, he added. Legal action is being taken in connection with the incident.
