Undertrial escapes using another inmate’s bail papers, six jail guards suspended

An undertrial inmate escaped from Brahmanbaria District Jail by fraudulently using the bail documents of another prisoner. Six jail guards have been temporarily suspended for negligence of duty in connection with the incident. In addition, a case has been filed with Sadar Police Station against five undertrial inmates and two convicted prisoners.

The escaped inmate has been identified as Hridoy Mia (28), son of Mujibur Mia of Nimbari Middle Para in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria. He fled the jail around 12:00 noon on Tuesday.

As part of the investigation, Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) of Chattogram Division, Chhagir Mia, visited the district jail on Saturday. He said Hridoy Mia managed to leave the jail by presenting another inmate’s bail papers. A case has been filed with Sadar Police Station, and six jail guards have been suspended for negligence.

The suspended jail guards are: Morshed Alam, gate guard Md Hanif, release section guard Sahab Uddin, admission section in-charge and guard Rabiul Alam, internal intelligence section guard Zahid Hasan, and ICT section guard Abu Khair.

On Thursday, Jail Superintendent Obaidur Rahman formally informed the Senior Judicial Magistrate Amli Court (Nabinagar) in writing. On the same day, Jailor Manjurul Islam filed a case with Sadar Police Station naming seven accused.

Those named in the case are: escaped undertrial Hridoy Mia (28); undertrial Didar Hossain (28) of Krishnanagar, Nabinagar; undertrial Billal Mia (22) of Nandura Purba Para; convicted prisoner Md Palash Hossain (25) of Paghachang, Sadar upazila; convicted prisoner Akhtar Hossain alias Choton (30) of Konnabari, Kasba; undertrial Shipon Mia (45) of Sultanpur, Moglabazar, Sylhet; and undertrial Monir Hossain (55) of Sonargaon area, Kasba. Five to seven unidentified persons have also been accused.

District Commissioner Sharmin Akhter Jahan said the allegations had been substantiated and six jail guards had already been suspended, making the formation of a separate probe committee unnecessary.
