UP member among two arrested for obstructing anti-drug drive in Manikganj
Police have arrested two people, including a Union Parishad (UP) member, on charges of obstructing an anti-narcotics operation in Harirampur upazila of Manikganj.
The arrests were made on Friday night from Kaloi village under Gala Union. The detainees were produced before a court on Saturday morning (April 11).
Police identified the accused as Md. Ali, 37, son of Julmot Pramanik of Kaloi village and a member of Gala Union Parishad, and Md. Atahar Gazi, 38, son of Main Uddin Gazi of Nali Union in Ghior upazila.
Officials said Md. Ali is also a former joint general secretary of the upazila unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. He has multiple pending cases involving assault and extortion, though he is currently out on bail. His brother is also reportedly facing 10–12 narcotics-related cases, police added.
Harirampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Afzal Hossain said a team conducted an anti-drug drive in Kaloi village on Saturday evening based on a tip-off.
He alleged that the UP member obstructed the operation and verbally abused on-duty police officers, disrupting official duties.
Police later arrested Md. Ali and his associate Atahar Gazi from the spot.
A case was subsequently filed against them for obstructing law enforcement activities.
