UP member hacked to death in Jhenaidah
A Union Parishad (UP) member was hacked to death by assailants in Harinakundu upazila of Jhenaidah.
The victim, Moneam Hossain, 50, a member of Ward 9 of Vayna Union Parishad, was attacked around 8:30pm near Vayna Bazar in the Kalishankarpur area on Wednesday night (September 9).
He was also the president of the now-banned Awami League’s Ward 9 unit.
Police and locals said Moneam had gone to Abdulpur in Kushtia to watch a sports event earlier in the day. On his way home by motorcycle from Vayna Bazar, several assailants intercepted him near Kalishankarpur Government Primary School and attacked him with sharp weapons.
Hearing his cries, locals rushed to the scene and took him to Kushtia Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead after his arrival. His body was kept at the hospital morgue.
Masum Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Harinakundu Police Station, said, "The attackers had not yet been identified."
Investigators suspect the killing may have stemmed from a longstanding dispute involving opposing groups, but the motive has yet to be established.
Police said the body would undergo an autopsy before further legal action is taken.
