Upcoming election will be major test for law-enforcement: Foreign Adviser
Foreign affairs adviser Md Touhid Hossain has said that law and order is the foundation of every nation. Although the situation initially faced significant challenges, it has now stabilised considerably, he said. However, he noted that the upcoming election will be a major test for law-enforcement agencies.
He made the remarks while speaking as chief guest during a views-exchange meeting with senior officials at the Rangpur deputy commissioner’s conference room on Saturday morning.
“The chief adviser Dr Yunus has said that an ideal election is ahead. Law-enforcement agencies must remain vigilant. Anyone defeated in the election may try to create unrest. We seek to hand over responsibility to an elected government through a peaceful election,” he said.
Highlighting the need to prioritise the education and health sectors, the adviser stated, “A broader assessment shows that developed countries prioritise healthcare and education. We are working on it. To reduce the shortage of medical staff, 2,500 nurses and 3,000 doctors have already been recruited. The next budget will allocate more funds in these sectors.”
Regarding potato exports, he said the matter is under consideration. “It is not simple. Few countries import potatoes regularly, while some do so only under particular circumstances,” he noted.
On overseas employment, he said, “Those going abroad must acquire skills. Many travel without skill, resulting in low wages. Skilled professionals, including nurses, are in high demand worldwide. Sending a more skilled workforce would greatly benefit the country.”
Speaking about livestock, he added, “Small indigenous cattle are abundant in Rangpur, and their meat is highly delicious. There is strong demand in Dhaka too. The livestock department may explore this potential.”
The meeting was presided over by deputy commissioner Mohammad Enamul Ahsan. Others who spoke include superintendent of police Mohammad Marufat Hussain, civil surgeon Dr Shaheen Sultana, Rangpur Metropolitan additional police commissioner Tofayel Ahmed, district livestock officer Dr Abu Sayeed and other officials.
A documentary titled “Rangpur: The heart of northern advancement” was also screened at the event. As part of his visit, he inspected various establishments. On Sunday, he will return to Dhaka through Saidpur airport after attending a views-exchange session at an educational institution in Kishoreganj, Nilphamari.
