UPDF member shot dead in Khagrachhari

A member of the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) Prasit group, was shot dead by assailants in Khagrachhari.

The incident took place in the Akbari area of the district town on Wednesday morning (Arpil 8), according to police.

The deceased was identified as Newton Chakma, 47, was the son of the late Sonadhan Chakma, a resident of Rangamati’s Mogban Union.

Amal Tripura, former central president of the Hill Students Council supported by the UPDF, confirmed the killing, saying Newton and another group member were in the area when gunmen opened fire and fled. While the other member escaped, Newton was fatally shot on the spot.

The UPDF has blamed the UPDF Democratic faction for the attack.

Confirming the incident, Khagrachhari Sadar police said the body has been taken to the Sadar Hospital morgue for postmortem and legal proceedings are underway into this matter.
