US Ambassador congratulates Khalilur Rahman

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen has congratulated Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In a congratulatory message issued, Ambassador Christensen praised Rahman on his victory, according to the US Embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday (June 3).

"Congratulations to Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on being elected President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly," the ambassador said in the message.

Rahman has also received congratulations from the governments of China, India, Pakistan, and Maldives following his election victory.

The election for the presidency of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

Rahman's opponent was Andreas Kakouris, Cyprus' Special Envoy for Multilateral Affairs. Representatives of UN member states cast their votes through a secret ballot.

Of the 190 votes cast, Khalilur Rahman secured 99 votes, while Kakouris received 91. Rahman won the election by a margin of eight votes, becoming the next President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
