US praises Bangladesh for sheltering displaced Rohingyas
Thomas Tommy Pigott, principal deputy spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, has commended the Bangladesh government for its continued humanitarian support for the displaced Rohingya population from Myanmar.
Tommy Pigott made the compliment in a statement issued by the U.S. State Department on Sunday (August 24).
The U.S. also acknowledged other regional countries that have provided refuge to the Rohingya.
The statement expressed solidarity with the people of Myanmar, including the Rohingya and other ethnic groups who have been victims of violence and displacement. The U.S. thanked Bangladesh for hosting over a million displaced Rohingya and recognized the country’s role in providing vital support during a prolonged humanitarian crisis.
Since the onset of military operations in Rakhine State in August 2017, more than 700,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh within months, joining over 400,000 who had already sought refuge there.
Each year, approximately 30,000 new Rohingya children are born in the refugee camps. Currently, more than 1.3 million Rohingya refugees live in Bangladesh, including both longstanding residents and new arrivals.
