Vagrant youth held over 2 charred bodies found at Savar community centre

Police have detained a vagrant man in connection with the recovery of two charred bodies from an abandoned municipal community centre in Savar, triggering widespread concern in the area.

The suspect, identified as Samrat Hossain alias King Khan, 34, was arrested on Sunday afternoon (January 18) from the Thana Road area of Savar, police said.

According to law enforcement officials, Samrat had been living in and around the Thana Road area for a long time and used to stay at the abandoned community centre at night. Locals described him as a homeless individual who was believed to be mentally unstable.

Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of the Dhaka District North Detective Branch, said the suspect was identified after reviewing footage from multiple CCTV cameras installed around the community centre.

“Based on the CCTV analysis, Samrat was identified as a suspect and later detained for questioning,” the OC said.

He added that during preliminary interrogation, the detainee provided significant information relating to six killings. “These claims are being verified, and further details will be disclosed in the interest of the investigation,” he said.

Earlier, police recovered two burned bodies from the abandoned municipal community centre in Savar, an incident that has caused widespread alarm among local residents.
