Van driver killed after being hit by battery-run rickshaw in Dhaka

A van driver was killed after being struck by a battery-run rickshaw in the Shyampur area of Dhaka.

The accident took place around 1:30pm in front of Hamida Petrol Pump at Dolairpar on Sunday afternoon (May 17).

The deceased was identified as Shafiqul Islam, 37, hailed from Rajnagar village under Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha district. He had been living in the Basabo area of Dhaka and worked as a van driver transporting goods.

According to eyewitness, Shafiqul was transporting cartons on a van when a battery-operated rickshaw hit him, causing him to fall beneath the vehicle. Locals rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead at around 2:45pm.

His elder brother, Md. Shariful Islam, said Shafiqul had left home in the morning carrying carton-making materials toward Shyampur before the accident occurred.

DMCH Police Camp in-charge Md. Faruk confirmed the death and said the body has been kept at the morgue.

Shyampur Police Station has been informed about the incident, he added.
