Birangona Sakhina Begum, a brave female freedom fighter known for killing five Razakars with a machete during the 1971 Liberation War, died early Tuesday in Nikli Upazila of Kishoreganj district. She was 93 years old.

Sakhina passed away around 5.00am at her home in Boromaipara village under Hilchia Union in Bajitpur Upazila, due to complications related to old age.

Hilchia Union Parishad Chairman Mazharul Haque Nahid confirmed her death. Niyaz Mamunur Rahman Puton, president of the local BNP chapter, said, "Sakhina Begum lived in Boromaipara for nearly 40 years. From a young age, she shared many stories about the Liberation War. She was an honored Bir Muktijoddha (freedom fighter)."

Sakhina Begum, daughter of Sonafar Mia and Dukhi Bibi from Guruoi village in Nikli Upazila, was a fearless fighter who received training with the local resistance group ‘Basu Bahini’ and took part in active combat against Pakistani forces. Her nephew, Matiur Rahman, lost his life in October 1971 during a mission to liberate Nikli from occupation.

Later that month, during a major attack by freedom fighters, Sakhina personally killed five Razakars, as recounted by local commanders. The machete she used in battle is preserved at the Liberation War Museum in Dhaka, bearing her name as a symbol of her bravery.

She spent her final years living with her maternal aunt in Boromaipara, where she passed away peacefully.

Sakhina Begum’s remarkable contributions to the country’s independence will forever be remembered.
