Police have identified the man shot dead in Dhaka’s New Market area as Khondakar Naim Ahmed Titon, 38, a listed top criminal.
The shooting took place around 7:45pm on Tuesday near Shah Newaz Hall. Titon was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S N Md Nazrul Islam confirmed said the victim’s identity was confirmed through fingerprint analysis.
He said: Titon was ranked second on a list of 23 top criminals published in 2001 and had recently been released on bail.
Police said Titon, a resident of Jigatola in Hazaribagh, was brother-im-law of another alleged top criminal, Sanjidul Islam Imon. Law enforcement sources said Imon is also under suspicion in connection with the killing.
Investigators believe the murder may have been the result of a conflict within criminal networks.

DMCH Police Camp in-charge Inspector Md Faruk said the victim sustained multiple bullet injuries to the head and body. The body has been kept in the morgue.
