Video of woman being tortured goes viral, husband and father-in-law held

A woman has been tied up and tortured in public in Dashmina upazila, Patuakhali, by her husband and father-in-law. The couple is alleged to have a history of abuse after the husband married a second woman, which has sparked outrage over a video of the assault that went viral .

The video, which spread widely on social media late on Wednesday, June 10, shows Lipi Akter, 27, tied up on a three-wheeler and being hit, while she screams in pain .

Lipu, who has two sons and three daughters, told police that her husband, Shah Jamal, had taken a second wife, and after that both he and her father-in-law, Moslem Mridha, 70, had been subjecting her to physical and mental torture .

Following the incident, Lipi filed a case against the two. Police have arrested Shah Jamal, 35, and his father, Moslem Mridha . They have been sent to jail by a court .

The victim said local arbitration meetings had been held over the abuse, but no permanent resolution was ever reached .

Officer-in-Charge Atiqul Islam of Dashmina Police Station said neighbours and passers-by stopped the three-wheeler carrying the victim and rescued her. The two accused were then detained and handed over to the police .
