Violence against women rises in March: 47 killed, 57 raped
Violence against women and girls in Bangladesh rose to alarming levels in March, with 47 deaths and 57 reported rape cases, according to a monthly report by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.
The report, based on national newspaper coverage, documented a total of 190 women and girls subjected to various forms of abuse during the month.
Among the rape cases, 14 were gang rapes, while five victims were killed after being assaulted. Additionally, six attempted rape cases and 12 incidents of sexual harassment were recorded.
Eight children were among the 47 deaths in killing incidents, while 17 cases were classified as suspicious deaths.
Other forms of violence included one acid attack, three burn incidents—one resulting in death—and dowry-related abuse affecting five women, with three fatalities. Cases of domestic violence and the killing of a domestic worker were also reported.
The report further noted that 14 women and girls died by suicide in March, including five cases believed to have been instigated. A total of five abduction or attempted abduction cases were also recorded.
Experts have warned that the situation reflects a deeply concerning trend, calling for stricter law enforcement, greater public awareness, and swift justice and support for victims.
