Voting underway in Bogura-6 by-election, Sherpur-3 general election
Voting is underway in Bangladesh’s Bogura-6 by-election and Sherpur-3 general election, with polling beginning at 7:30am on Thursday and set to continue until 4:30pm.
In Bogura-6, three candidates are in the race: BNP nominee Rezaul Karim Badsha, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Abidur Rahman, and Bangladesh Development Party (BDP) candidate Al-Amin Talukdar. A total of 4,50,309 voters are expected to cast ballots across 150 polling stations and 835 booths.
Robust security measures have been put in place, including 250 army personnel as a striking force, along with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police, and Ansar.
In Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi–Jhenaigati), four candidates are contesting: BNP’s Mahmudul Haque Rubel, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Masudur Rahman, independent candidate Aminul Islam, and BASAD (Marxist) nominee Mizanur Rahman. The constituency has 4,09,806 registered voters across 128 centres and 751 booths.
Authorities have deployed a multi-layered security arrangement in both constituencies to ensure a peaceful and orderly vote.
The Election Commission said all preparations have been completed to ensure a free and fair election, with strict monitoring in place.
The Sherpur-3 election was previously postponed following the death of a candidate, while the Bogura-6 seat fell vacant after BNP Chairperson and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman relinquished it in accordance with electoral law.
