Wanted fraud suspect dies after fall during police raid in Dhaka
A wanted fraud suspect died after falling from the eighth-floor ledge of a residential building in Siddheswari during a police raid to execute an arrest warrant in the early hours of Thursday (August 6).
The deceased, Nazrul Islam, 51, was a former accounts officer of Gazipur City Corporation and was wanted in connection with a fraud case, according to police.
Officials from Ramna Police Station said a team went to Nazrul's apartment around midnight to execute the warrant. During the search, officers spotted him standing on the ledge outside a bedroom window and asked him to come back inside. Moments later, he fell from the ledge.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at around 3:00 am.
Sub-Inspector Md. Uzzal, who led the operation, said Nazrul had apparently moved onto the ledge after becoming aware of the police presence. Investigators believe he may have been attempting to reach a neighbouring flat when he lost his footing and fell.
Police said Nazrul's wife, Roushnara Begum, was at the apartment during the raid, while their son lives abroad.
The family had not issued any statement at the time of reporting. Police said the body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
