Warehouse inspector injured in Tongi fire dies in Hospital
Another firefighter has succumbed to burn injuries sustained during the Tongi chemical warehouse fire, marking the third death linked to the incident.
Khondokar Jannatul Nayeem, 37, a warehouse inspector with the Fire Service and Civil Defence, passed away around 10am on Saturday (September 27) while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
According to a Fire Service press release, Nayeem was injured while battling the blaze at Sahara Market on 22 September. He had suffered burns on 42% of his body.
Three other firefighters were injured in the same incident. Two—Shamim Ahmed and Nurul Huda—died earlier during treatment on 23 and 24 September, respectively. Nayeem is the third casualty from the fire.
Originally from Nakla upazila of Sherpur, Nayeem joined the service on 24 August 2016 and served in several stations including Manikganj, Narayanganj, Chattogram, and Tongi.
So far, 51 fire personnel have lost their lives in the line of duty, the Fire Service confirmed.
