Warrant accused escapes police custody in Thakurgaon
A warrant-listed accused escaped from police custody in Thakurgaon while officers were taking him from Dhaka to Atwari police station in neighboring Panchagarh, police said.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Saidar, 32, son of Shamsul Haque of Satkhamar in Atwari upazila, fled from the Old Bus Stand area of Thakurgaon town at around 10:18pm on Friday night (August 7).
Police said Saidar had been arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-1) in the Tongi area of Dhaka on Aug. 6 in connection with a warrant case. He was subsequently handed over to Airport Police Station before being transferred to Atwari police for further legal proceedings.
While officers were transporting him to Atwari, they stopped in the bus stand area of Thakurgaon, where Saiedar allegedly broke away and ran off.
Eyewitnesses said the accused fled despite police being present at the scene, triggering a brief commotion among people in the area.
Shahjahan Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station, confirmed, "The incident, saying the accused escaped while being taken to Atwari from Dhaka."
"Police from Thakurgaon and Atwari are working jointly to recapture Saidar, while law enforcement operations to locate him remain underway," the OC added.
