The fire service has begun removing water from the basement of an under-construction building at Dhanmondi 32, which has been a topic of discussion for the past few days.

The water removal process started on Sunday morning.

On February 5, an agitated group of students vandalized the residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 in protest against an online speech by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The protesters also gathered at an adjacent under-construction building, commonly referred to as the “CRE building.”

Upon entering, they discovered multiple basement floors. While they were able to access two levels, they found the next floor submerged in water. It is speculated that the basement extends several more levels below.

Since then, social media has been flooded with speculation and rumours about the presence of a so-called “Aynaghar” in the building. Many have demanded that the water be drained to reveal what lies beneath. Discussions on the matter have been ongoing since February 6.

Finally, on the morning of February 9, the fire service initiated the process of draining the basement water to investigate further.
