Water levels receding in Kushiyara, flood situation improving in Sylhet-Sunamganj

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has predicted further improvement in the flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj. However, the Kushiyara River is still flowing above danger levels at the Fenchuganj station in Sylhet and the Markuli station in Sunamganj.

The centre provided this information in its latest bulletin on Saturday (July 25).

The bulletin said water levels in the Surma-Kushiyara rivers in the northeastern region have receded over the past 24 hours, and this trend may continue over the next three days. As a result, the flood situation in the low-lying areas along the rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts is likely to improve further in the coming days.

Meanwhile, a low-pressure area has formed over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and the adjacent Gangetic West Bengal-north Odisha coast. There is a possibility that this system may become more pronounced within the next two days.

The bulletin also said water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers may recede over the next three days. However, in the next 24 hours, some places in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura, Sirajganj and Tangail districts may see river levels flowing close to warning levels. This could cause temporary inundation in low-lying areas along the rivers.

On the other hand, water levels in the Selaonia River in the eastern and southeastern regions have risen somewhat. However, water levels in the Muhuri, Gomti, Halda, Sangu, Matamuhuri and Feni rivers have receded. The forecast noted that water levels in these rivers may remain fairly stable over the next three days.
