'Waterlogging' in Dhaka after brief heavy rain, residents suffer
A sudden downpour lasting about an hour has flooded various roads and low-lying areas of the capital, causing severe waterlogging and immense suffering for residents on Friday, June 12.
The sky turned cloudy after noon, and heavy rain began in the afternoon. Within a short time, water accumulated on streets, disrupting traffic movement. Water rose knee-deep in many areas, according to reports.
Office-goers, pedestrians, and motorcyclists were the worst affected. Vehicle movement slowed on various roads, creating long traffic jams. People were seen taking shelter in shops and elevated places.
However, amidst the waterlogging, a contrasting scene was witnessed in some areas of the capital, with children playing in the accumulated water.
According to the meteorological department, an extension of a low-pressure system from Gangetic West Bengal extends to the northern Bay of Bengal, and monsoon winds are currently moderately active. As a result, gusty winds, thunder showers, and heavy rainfall are likely in various parts of the country over the next few days.
The capital's persistent waterlogging problem has once again come to the fore, compounding the woes of residents.
