We burned Baniachong police station, set SI Santosh on fire: Anti-Discrimination Student Movement leader

A video of a conversation between Mahdi Hasan, general secretary of the Habiganj district unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and an officer-in-charge has gone viral on social media. The exchange took place while Mahdi Hasan was attempting to secure the release of a man identified as Enamul Hasan Nayan, described as a “July fighter”, from police custody.

In the video, the student leader is heard claiming that the current administration was installed because of the anti-discrimination movement. During a heated exchange with the OC, Mahdi Hasan asks why Enamul was detained and says, “Because of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, this administration is in place today. We burned Baniachong police station, we set SI Santosh on fire.”

The remarks have sparked widespread discussion and criticism across the district.

According to sources, Enamul Hasan Nayan was detained early Friday, January 2, from his home in Kalimnagar and taken to Shayestaganj police station. He was picked up at dawn after being identified as a former Chhatra League leader. Later in the afternoon, leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement intervened and secured his release. It is learned that Enamul was released following mediation by Assistant Superintendent of Police of Sadar Circle, Shahidul Haque Munshi.

Confirming the matter, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement leader Hasan said Enamul Hasan Nayan had previously been involved in Chhatra League politics but left the organisation during the July movement and fought alongside them on the front lines.

He added that they initially requested the OC to resolve the matter, but received no response. Enamul was eventually released through the mediation of the assistant superintendent of police.

When contacted, Shayestaganj police station officer-in-charge Md Abul Kalam said Enamul was detained based on the Chhatra League’s 2023 committee list. He added that Enamul Hasan was later released following mediation between both sides.
