We want closed industries to return to production: Commerce Minister
Commerce, Industry, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said that when industries remain operational, employment is created, the local economy remains active and government revenue increases. "Every industry is not just an establishment but is connected to the emotions and livelihoods of the people in the surrounding areas," he said.
The commerce minister was speaking to journalists after visiting Panchagarh Sugar Mills Limited and exchanging views with sugarcane farmers on Saturday, May 9.
He said a functional mill creates employment, increases government revenue, keeps the local economy active and creates a path for repaying existing debts. "So we want these establishments to return to production," he added.
The minister said the government's goal is to reopen not only Panchagarh Sugar Mill but all closed industries across the country. Extensive repairs of the mill's infrastructure and machinery are needed after being closed for a long time. Experts' opinions are being sought and all possible aspects are being reviewed.
The minister further said six of the country's 15 sugar mills are currently closed, and initiatives have been taken to revive several other state-owned industrial establishments.
Local MP Barrister Nowshed Jameer, Industry Secretary Md Obaidur Rahman, BSCIC Chairman Md Saiful Islam, District Commissioner Mosammat Shukria Parvin, Additional Superintendent of Police Md Farhad Hossain, mill officials, sugarcane farmer representatives and labour leaders were present.
