West Indies leave Bangladesh waiting for Women's World Cup spot
Bangladesh's winning streak came to an end after three straight victories. Nigar Sultana’s team lost to West Indies by 3 wickets in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers on Thursday (April 17). This loss has made Bangladesh’s path to the main round of the World Cup a bit tougher. Now, they must beat Pakistan in their final match to secure a spot in the tournament.
So far, Bangladesh has 6 points from 4 matches in the qualifiers. Pakistan also has 6 points but has played one match less. If Pakistan beats Thailand, they will confirm their place in the main round. However, if Pakistan loses, qualification could come down to net run rate—where Bangladesh currently holds an advantage.
In Thursday’s match at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground, Bangladesh batted first after losing the toss and scored 227 for 9 in 50 overs. Despite losing early wickets, Sharmin Sultana and Fargana Hoque built a solid 118-run partnership for the second wicket. Fargana scored 42 while Sharmin made 67 off 79 balls. After their dismissals, the rest of the batting lineup struggled. Some late contributions from Nahida Akter (25) and Rabeya Khatun (23*) helped Bangladesh post a fighting total.
In reply, West Indies also had a shaky start, but strong middle-order performances by Henry (51*), Taylor (36), captain Matthews (33), and Joseph (31) helped them reach the target in 46 overs with 7 wickets down. Marufa Akter took 2 wickets for Bangladesh. The Player of the Match was West Indies pacer Aaliyah Alleyne, who took 4 important wickets.
Bangladesh’s final match in the qualifiers is on April 19 against Pakistan. That game will decide whether Nigar Sultana’s team qualifies directly for the World Cup or has to wait and depend on other match results.
