Jewel Hasan Saddam, former president of the banned Chhatra League unit of Bagerhat Sadar upazila, who bid a final farewell to his deceased wife and child at the jail gate, has been granted bail by the High Court. However, there is no sense of relief or joy within his family. They say bail came too late, when his wife and child are no longer alive.

After the news of the bail spread, Saddam’s mother, Delwara Ekram, expressed deep anguish over what her son would face upon returning home. She said bail was not granted while his wife and child were alive, so what purpose does it serve now.

Expressing regret, she said they tried repeatedly to secure bail. Whenever bail was granted in one case, he was arrested in another. If bail had been granted even a day before the deaths of his wife and child, the family would not have had to endure such unbearable suffering.

She added that whether bail is granted or not now makes no difference. Even so, bail has been granted, but when he comes home, he will see the graves of his wife and son, so what is the value of this bail.

Meanwhile, Saddam’s father-in-law, Jatiya Party leader Ruhul Amin Hawladar, demanded justice from the state, calling the refusal to grant parole in such circumstances inhuman.

Saddam’s maternal uncle, Hemayet Uddin, who applied for parole on his behalf, said all efforts to secure parole had failed, though he thanked everyone involved for the bail.

Saddam’s brother-in-law, Shahnewaz Amin Shuvo, said there is no meaning to this bail and described the entire episode as a tragic drama.

On Monday, a High Court bench comprising Justice J B M Hasan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan granted bail to Sadaam. Supreme Court lawyer Sayeed Ahmed Raja represented him during the hearing.

Jewel Hasan Saddam is the son of Ekram Hawladar and Delwara Ekram of Sabekdanga area in Bagerhat Sadar upazila. Following the flight of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, he went into hiding and was later arrested from Gopalganj on April 5, 2025. He has since been in jail in multiple cases.

Earlier, on Friday afternoon, the bodies of his wife Kaniz Suborna, also known as Swarnali, 22, and their nine-month-old son Sejad Hasan Nazif were recovered from Saddam’s house in Sabekdanga village.

After autopsy at Bagerhat District Hospital the following Saturday afternoon, the bodies were taken to Suborna’s parental home in the village. Later, at around 4:15pm, the bodies were transported to Jashore Central Jail, where Saddam saw his wife and child for the last time. Their funeral prayers were held at the local Eidgah ground at 11:20pm, after which both were buried side by side at Suborna’s family graveyard.

The refusal to grant parole to Saddam even after the deaths of his wife and child sparked widespread criticism across the country.
